Wanted man in custody after Lexington County home was surrounded by SC police
Residents of a neighborhood in the West Columbia area of South Carolina reported hearing bangs and a police loud speaker Saturday morning. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that it was among agencies at the scene attempting to execute an arrest warrant for a man accused of domestic violence.
In a standoff that continued into the afternoon, Lexington County deputies, along with members of other law enforcement agencies, surrounded a home in the 2600 block of Crest Drive, near Platt Springs Road, in an effort to “arrest a man wanted on charges associated with a domestic violence incident last night in Chapin,” Captain Adam Myrick of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department told The State in an email. That home is close to exit 111 on Interstate 26.
The sheriff’s department identified the wanted man as 51-year-old Bobby Van Crapps Jr., who is known by the nickname Link. Crapps is wanted on multiple charges related to the incident in Chapin, the sheriff’s department said.
On Monday, the sheriff’s department said Crapps surrendered to law enforcement officers at 8:45 a.m. He’s being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, according to the sheriff’s department.
Crapps was charged with assault and battery (of a high and aggravated nature), first-degree burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and pointing and presenting firearms at a person, jail records show. No bond has been set, according to jail records.
Neighbors in the community began posting on Facebook Saturday morning that a “major police barricade ... has been going on for hours.” Residents reported hearing loudspeakers and bangs and seeing dogs and other resources deployed on the scene. The sheriff’s department didn’t provide any specifics about what happened at the home.
“Deputies and officers from other agencies have secured the immediate area around the scene to keep nearby homes and residents safe,” Myrick said.
