Teen girl was driving recklessly in stolen car before crash, SC sheriff says

A teenage girl was charged with multiple crimes Saturday night after a stolen vehicle was involved in a crash, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 9 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a crash involving injuries at the intersection of Farrow Road and Ander Drive, the sheriff’s department said Monday in a news release. That’s in Columbia, in the area between U.S. 21/Wilson Boulevard and S.C. 277.

Deputies saida white Acura was involved in the collision, and multiple witness were able to provide the clothing description of a young female who fled following the wreck, according to the release. Deputies got the address where the vehicle was registered, then learned that a stolen vehicle report was being made from that location at the same time, the sheriff’s department said.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies found an open container of alcohol in the center console, and surveillance footage showed only the driver was in the vehicle, according to the release. The person behind the wheel was driving recklessly and speeding before crashing into another vehicle, the sheriff’s department said.

K9 units were called to the scene and helped track down a 16-year-old, who then was detained, according to the release.

The juvenile was taken to a local hospital and checked for injuries, the sheriff’s department said. After being medically cleared, she was taken to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility and charged with of possession of stolen motor vehicle and open container, according to the release.

Because of the juvenile’s age, her identity is not being made public.

No other injuries were reported, and there was no word if the other vehicle, or vehicles, involved in the crash were occupied when the collision happened.
