Overnight shooting at Columbia bar and grill leaves 1 dead, police say

A man is dead following a fight that led to a shooting at a Columbia eatery, according to police.

Bernard Jackson Jr., 53, was arrested early Friday and charged with manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after fatally shooting Wendell F. Sholar, 33, during a fight at S Bar and Grill, where Sholar worked, a news release said.

The shooting occurred after midnight at the eatery, located at 7535 Garners Ferry Road, as patrons were leaving the establishment and headed to their cars, according to the release.

Two officers were alerted to a fight between Jackson and Sholar in the parking lot. Amid the fight, Jackson shot Sholar, the release said.

Police arrested Jackson on scene and rendered aid to Scholar until EMS arrived.

Jackson was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The incident at S Bar and Grill was one of two fatal Columbia shootings in one night. Four people were shot leaving one dead in Columbia’s downtown Elmwood Park neighborhood early Friday morning at a party in a short-term rental, according to police. Three others were injured and taken to the hospital.
