Two people were shot and a South Carolina man has been arrested, sheriff says
A South Carolina man was arrested Sunday night after two people were shot, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 6:30 p.m., deputies responded to a reported shooting in the area near the intersection of S.C. 261 and Waco Court, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. That’s in the Wedgefield area of Sumter County.
Deputies found two people who had been shot and provided them with medical aid before the victims were taken to an area hospital, according to the release. Further information on the victims’ conditions was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
Mark Allen McCoy, a 62-year-old Wedgefield resident, was arrested at the scene, according to the release. McCoy, whose home is a quarter mile from where the victims were found, was charged with attempted murder and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, the sheriff’s office said.
McCoy was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital after his arrest for an unrelated issue and will be booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center upon his release, according to the sheriff’s office.
There was no word on a motive for the gunfire, but the sheriff’s office said the shooting remains under investigation.
