Thursday night during a high-speed chase, a wanted Midlands man crashed into a Kershaw County deputy’s patrol vehicle before fleeing, Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Kershaw officials said Leon Carl Howard III, who has multiple warrants for burglary and grand larceny, is the suspect who they were chasing when the crash occurred.

According to the news release, Howard ran into a wooded area in Lugoff between Lachicotte, Ward and Rosenberg road wearing gray sweatpants with no shirt or shoes after the collision.

Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan said he does not believe Howard is in the same area, but warns locals to stay alert, lock their cars and secure their homes to be safe.

“We feel like this guy is only a danger to the public when he’s behind the wheel of a vehicle.” Boan said in the news release. “Don’t leave your vehicles unlocked with car keys in them and keep your doors locked in the house,”

The search for Howard is still active and Kershaw County deputies as well as the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division ask that anyone with information call 803-425-1512.
