Woman and her grandchildren got lost in the woods after dark, SC sheriff says

A woman and her two grandchildren recently were rescued after they got lost in South Carolina woods after dark, according to the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office said it got an emergency 911 call about a woman and her grandkids getting lost.

The family members had gone for a walk near a creek on Dean Road, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. That’s in the area between S.C. 121/Johnston Highway and U.S. 378.

Deputies began to search, and the sheriff’s office Bloodhound Tracking Team was brought along to help, according to the release. The Saluda County Emergency Management Division also assisted in the search by providing a drone to track in the air, the sheriff’s office said.

Tracking team deputies found the family a short time later, according to the release.

Neither the grandmother nor her grandchildren were harmed and they were taken back to their home by deputies, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Josh Price commended “the actions of the men and women of the sheriff’s office who work hard and are dedicated to keeping our citizens safe.”

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.

Safety tips

Make a plan

“It’s important to plan before you leave your home. Whether you’re camping, hiking or just going outside for some relaxing, know the route you’ll be taking and how long you plan to be gone,” according to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

“Tell a responsible person about your plans and when you anticipate you’ll be home. if you don’t come back in a reasonable amount of time, they can notify local authorities and provide them with details that can be really important if you need to be rescued.”

Be prepared

“Even if you don’t plan on being outdoors for very long, it’s important to be prepared for changing conditions or being gone longer than expected.”
