A man wanted for allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend on her birthday is in custody, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Cordera B. Hopkins, 36, was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after allegedly shooting his girlfriend on her 42nd birthday June 29, according to a news release.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified Monique Worthy as the victim.

Officers found her body in a home in the 1500 block of Levity Street, police said. That’s in the area between North Main Street and Farrow Road.

Her death was deemed an isolated domestic-related homicide, according to police, who said Worthy was Hopkins’ “female companion.”

No other injuries were reported.

Investigators continue to determine the specific motive for the shooting.

Hopkins was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
