A former Hanahan police detective is in custody after admitting to stealing from the department to, among other things, build a deck at his residence, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Carlos Reyna Hernandez, 31, was charged with misconduct in office after a SLED investigation revealed he stole multiple items, including tools from the Hanahan’s Police Department on four separate occasions. Hernandez was working as a detective sergeant for the department during thefts on May 25, May 30, June 13 and June 19 in 2025, according to a sworn affidavit.

Investigators verified the thefts through surveillance footage from the evidence room, as well as an admission of guilt by Hernandez, the affidavit said. On one occasion, Hernandez said he’d used the stolen tools to construct a deck at his residence, according to the affidavit.

Detectives with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office located a box containing multiple pieces of evidence from several cases — evidence that should have been in the Hanahan Police Department’s custody — at Herandez’s home, according to the release.

Hernandez admitted the evidence discovered at his residence was never officially processed with the department.

Hernandez was booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Berkeley County.
