Police investigate FCA high school football camp fight at SC college
Police are investigating an altercation at Presbyterian College that involved students from D.W. Daniel High School attending a summer football camp, according to authorities.
A video that WIS-TV of Columbia says is of the confrontation shows at least two students attacking another student, hitting him with multiple punches. After the student being attacked lands on the floor, another student hits him at least four times, according to the video posted on WISTV.com.
Presbyterian College Campus Police were notified of an incident involving high school students on July 7, according to a statement posted on social media on Monday.
The students had been participating in a Fellowship of Christian Athletes summer football camp. The organization had rented the college’s facilities.
After an initial investigation of the incident, police referred the matter to the state Department of Juvenile Justice and the 8th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, officials said. The 8th Circuit includes Laurens County, the home of Presbyterian College.
The camp was not sponsored by the college, officials said, and none of its students were involved.
“We do not tolerate any form of violence on our campus,” the Presbyterian College Campus Police said in a statement. “We hope that due process and justice will be served appropriately.”
David Stumbo, the 8th Circuit solicitor, said his office is working closely with the law enforcement agencies and the Department of Juvenile Justice.
“We will provide updates on the case when appropriate and as state law allows,” Stumbo said in a statement.
The Pickens County school district issued a statement saying that the “retreat, though not during the school year, was a school-sponsored event, and we take matters involving student conduct at such events very seriously.
“We are following our own district disciplinary policies, adhering to our athletic policy ... and also cooperating with Laurens County law enforcement through their legal process.”
The district said it is committed to a thorough review of the situation and an investigation of the Daniel football program. Due to student privacy laws, the district said it is unable to provide specific details about the students involved or the disciplinary actions taken.
