Infant killed in shooting, say SC police who are searching for the gunmen

An infant was killed Sunday in an early morning shooting at a South Carolina apartment, according to the Spartanburg Police Department.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified 7-month-old Zymir Demarco Smith as the baby who died, police said in a news release.

At about 4:15 a.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment in the 300 block of Collins Avenue, according to the release.

The officers found evidence of a shooting and followed a trail of blood in the apartment where they discovered the infant who had been shot in the neck, police said.

EMS was called to the apartment, but the infant was unresponsive and later pronounced dead, according to the release.

“This is a senseless and heartbreaking tragedy for our entire community,” Major Art Littlejohn said in the release.

No other injuries were reported.

An investigation showed that the infant and his mother were asleep when several unknown suspects fired multiple rounds into the home, police said.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by police.

“We will use every available resource to solve this case to determine who is responsible for this homicide,” Littlejohn said. “We are asking anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward and assist in this investigation.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 864-596-2065, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit a tip online.
