Columbia police investigating after man is killed in shooting at SC gas station

Authorities are investigating after a person was fatally shot at a Columbia gas station Friday night.

The Columbia Police Department said in a Saturday post on social media platform X that it was investigating a Friday shooting that happened at the Hot Spot at 3213 Farrow Road.

“(Police) investigators are working to determine who fatally shot a man at approximately 10 p.m. (Friday) at 3213 Farrow Road (the Hot Spot),” the social media post said. “The victim was taken to a hospital & later pronounced deceased.”

The gas station is northeast of downtown Columbia, not far from Prisma Health Richland Hospital and West Beltline Boulevard. The victim has not been publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

At about 10 p.m. Saturday, police said officers found a vehicle of interest in connection with the fatal shooting.

“What began as a police pursuit earlier (Saturday) evening on Elmwood (Avenue) and Sumter (Street) ended with the detainment of a male occupant at Harden and Lady (streets),” police said on social media. The intersection of Elmwood Avenue and Sumter Street is about 2 miles from the gas station where the shooting happened.

Information about the man in the vehicle of interest, and if he has been charged with any crimes, was not available.

Deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department assisted police during the chase.
