A student at Brookland-Cayce High School in Lexington County was discovered concealing a handgun, according to Lexington 2 school district officials

School administrators and the school resource officer were alerted by a tip Friday morning that a student was carrying a gun, officials said in a news release. The student was quickly located and searched, and a handgun was discovered in their backpack.

The student, a 14-year-old male, was taken into custody by law enforcement and is expected to be disciplined in accordance with board policy and state law, according to district officials and the Cayce Police Department.

The student, who was booked at the state Department of Juvenile Justice, was charged with unlawful carry of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm on school property, a spokesperson with the Cayce Police Department said.

“The district thanks the individuals who reported the tip, allowing for swift and appropriate action by school administration and law enforcement,” the release said.
