One person dies in single-vehicle crash on I-26 just north of Columbia
One person was killed Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on I-26 outside Columbia, the S.C. Highway Patrol reported.
The crash took place about 9:30 am in the eastbound lane of I-26 at the 96-mile marker, said Highway Patrol Cpl. David Jones. That location is about 15 miles northwest of downtown Columbia near the communities of White Rock and Chapin.
The involved vehicle — a 2016 GMC Yukon — was going east toward Columbia when it went off the road to the left and struck a concrete barrier, Jones said.
The driver was taken to a Richland County hospital by a local EMS unit, where he or she later died, Jones said.
The patrol gave no further details, including why the vehicle left the road, how fast the vehicle was traveling, the sex and age of the driver, whether there were other people in the vehicle and whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
The Highway Patrol is investigating.
The Richland County coroner’s office, which releases limited information on traffic fatalities, had not made a statement by mid-Monday morning.
