Two teenagers were arrested for a shooting in Richland County that injured one person and ended a baseball game early.

Police were called to The Landings Apartments off of Covenant Road for a reported shooting around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to a news release from the City of Forest Acres.

Officers arrived to a “chaotic scene,” officials said. A man had been shot four times outside his apartment. He was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. According to a news release, his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Around 8:30 p.m., police received a tip that the suspects were located at the Ravenwood Apartments.

By about 8:45 p.m., police had secured the apartment and detained the two suspects and recovered two guns.

Two 17-year-olds, Jaylon D. Holmes and Wendell Hosea Holmes, were both arrested and charged as adults with attempted murder and possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime. They are in custody at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

“This swift resolution is the result of months and years of boots-on-the-ground community policing paying off,” Forest Acres Police Chief Don Robinson said in a news release. “We’ve built strong relationships through front porch roll calls across our community, through apartment managers providing improved safety measures and better lighting, through neighbors working together to share videos, and through residents trusting us enough to share information. Last night, all those efforts came together.”

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, witnesses reported seeing a suspect flee in “multiple directions,” according to a previous police news release. With the help of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and a K9 tracking team, police expanded their search perimeter. The perimeter grew close to Trenholm Park.

Though the suspect was not at the park, Robinson decided to end ongoing baseball and softball games early as a precaution, and cleared 150 people from the area.

“We are also grateful to Trenholm Little League, Trenholm Park staff, and citizens at the park for staying calm and clearing the area in a safe and orderly way,” Robinson said in a news release. “That spirit of neighbors helping neighbors — from the park to the crime scene to the arrest — is what Forest Acres does best.”

Officials believe the shooting was an isolated incident and possibly a crime of opportunity, as those involved knew each other.

Those with further information are asked to contact the Forest Acres Police Department at (803) 782-9444 or submit an anonymous trip through Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
