Two people shot overnight at apartments for college students, SC sheriff says

Two people were shot in South Carolina early Sunday morning, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 2:20 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a shooting at 1050 Southern Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s Redpoint Columbia — an apartment complex marketed toward college students — which is near the University of South Carolina’s campus in Columbia.

“A place with a little more space. Somewhere off the beaten path, but still convenient to the University of South Carolina campus,” Redpoint’s website says.

Deputies found a victim with gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body when they arrived, according to the release.

While deputies tended to the victim, a second victim who had been shot in the upper body was discovered, the sheriff’s department said.

EMS responded to the apartment complex and took both victims to an area hospital, according to the release. Further information on the victims’ conditions was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the shooter, or shooters, and how many people were involved, was not available, and there was no word on a motive for the gunfire.

No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department.

There was a fatal shooting at another student apartment complex next door to Redpoint.

On Aug. 22, 19-year-old Columbia resident JoKayne Carter was killed in that shooting at The Roost apartment complex, which led to the arrests of 19-year-old Tyron Shelley and 20-year-old Ta’John Goodwin on murder charges, Richland County officials said.

There’s no information connecting August’s fatal shooting to the most recent gunfire at the apartment complex.

The Roost markets itself to students. Promotional material on its internet site says, “Nestled near USC, Allen University and Benedict College, The Roost offers the perfect blend of comfort, convenience, community and security for students seeking a home away from home. With spacious floor plans, modern amenities and a vibrant environment, The Roost is where student living truly takes flight.”

Anyone with information about Sunday’s deadly shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
