A Spartanburg man is in custody after authorities say he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from a vulnerable adult who resides in a nursing home.

Gregory Lewis Drummond, 65, was arrested Thursday and charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult, obtaining signature or property under false pretense valued at $10,000 or more and forgery valued at $10,000 or more, according a news release from the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.

Investigators from the attorney general’s office and the Spartanburg Police Department found that, between Feb. 14, 2024 and Oct. 31, 2024, Drummond siphoned $274,900 from a Wells Fargo Bank account that belonged to a resident of Physical Rehabilitation and Wellness Center of Spartanburg who’s classified as a vulnerable adult under South Carolina law, a news release said.

Drummond used forged power of attorney documents to secure the money, according to investigators.

The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office. If convicted, Drummond faces up to 25 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine, according to the release.

He was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center and granted a $50,000 bond.
