Woman found dead in vehicle at truck stop near I-20, SC sheriff says
A South Carolina man is in jail after a woman’s body was found in a vehicle at a gas station near Interstate 20, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said early Monday morning.
At about 12:20 a.m., the sheriff’s office reported that 34-year-old Little River resident Derrick Scott Sr., was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and unlawful conduct toward a child.
A few hours earlier, the sheriff’s office said that deputies had responded to a shooting at the Pilot Truck Stop/gas station at 1340 Sumter Highway. That’s near Exit 116 on I-20.
Deputies found a dead woman inside of a vehicle, who they believed had been shot multiple times, according to the release.
The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.
No other injuries were reported.
The sheriff’s office said it asked members of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to help process the scene.
One person was detained at the gas station, but it was not clear if that was Scott. But the sheriff’s office did say after the shooting that there was no continued threat to the public.
Ultimately, Scott was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where he is being held while awaiting a bond hearing, according to the release.
Information about a motive for the shooting, or Scott’s connection to the victim, was not available.
Despite the arrest, the sheriff’s office said it’s continuing to investigate the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-484-5353.
