SC man arrested in shooting death at Columbia restaurant, sheriff says

A South Carolina man was charged with murder after a Sunday night shooting at a restaurant killed one, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Juan L. Reyes-Padilla, a 43-year-old Columbia resident, is the man who died in the shooting at Tacos Puerto Barrio, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday.

At about 9 p.m., deputies responded to a shooting that happened at the Honduran/Mexican restaurant which is in a strip mall at 2205 Decker Boulevard, the sheriff’s department said. That’s in a part of Columbia between North Trenholm Road and Interstate 77.

At Tacos Puerto Barrio, deputies found Reyes-Padilla after he’d been shot in the upper body, according to the sheriff’s department. EMS also responded to the restaurant where Reyes-Padilla died at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

No other injuries were reported.

The shooter left the restaurant before the deputies arrived, according to the sheriff’s department. After reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses, Richland County deputies arrested 28-year-old Wilther Castillo-Antunez on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release. Castillo-Antunez was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to court records.

Castillo-Antunez was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing, according to the news release. His bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, according to the South Carolina public index. His first appearance date is scheduled for Dec. 19.
