One person is dead following an early morning shooting, Columbia police say
A small community in Columbia was impacted before sunrise Saturday, police report that someone had been fatally shot.
Jaqui L. Jones, a 37-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the shooting victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday.
The shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, on New York Avenue, which features several duplexed styled homes. Police say they believe the incident was isolated and that the public wasn’t in danger.
Investigators have not released any details relating to the shooting and didn’t specify a motive. The State attempted, to no avail, to contact the department’s watch commander for further information.
By Saturday afternoon, the scene was cleared, and the community echoed with silence without a neighbor in sight. Residents didn’t answer their door to a reporter seeking information.
The shooting continues to be investigated by police and the coroner’s office.
It’s unclear whether there were any other injuries reported.
