Columbia teen arrested after being seen with gun at SC State shootings, SLED says

More than three weeks after multiple shootings on the South Carolina State campus during the university’s homecoming celebration a third teenager from the Midlands was arrested, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

On Tuesday, 18-year-old Columbia resident Treveion James Crawford was charged with carrying a weapon on school property, SLED said in a news release.

The charge is connected to the separate Oct. 4 shootings that were only related by happening during the homecoming festivities.

Video surveillance showed a gun was inside a vest that Crawford was wearing, according to an arrest warrant.

Jaliyah Butler, 19, was killed in the first of the shootings at the university’s campus in Orangeburg, SLED said. A man was hospitalized after being hit by gunfire in the second shooting, according to the release. Further information on the surviving victim’s condition was not available.

Another guest on campus was injured while running from the scene of the first shooting, officials said. Information on that victim’s condition was not available.

None of the victims were S.C. State students, according to university officials.

The day after the shootings, 18-year-old Blythewood resident Matthew Daniel McCoy was charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person as well as carrying a weapon on school property, SLED previously said.

On Oct. 9, Jimmy Lee Thompson Jr., an 18-year-old from Lexington County, was charged with carrying a weapon on school property, according to SLED.

Crawford, Thompson and McCoy were booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center, according to SLED. But none of the teens were charged with murder or attempted murder. Currently, nobody has been charged with either of those counts connected to the shootings.

Information about any other the shooters, and how many people were involved, was not available, and there was no word on a motive for any of the instances of gunfire.

Crawford, Thompson and McCoy will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office, SLED said.

The shootings continue to be investigated by SLED, at the request of the S.C. State Department of Public Safety.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call 866-472-8477 and/or email tips@sled.sc.gov.
