Dispute between acquaintances turns into a shooting, SC sheriff says

A South Carolina man is in jail while another person is in a hospital following a shooting Wednesday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Thirty-three-year-old Sumter resident Thomas Mason Donlon was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The charges stem from an altercation, where a dispute between Donlon and an acquaintance escalated into a shooting, according to the release. Information about the dispute was not available.

At about 2:40 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a shooting at Laverne Avenue, the sheriff’s office said. When they arrived, deputies found the shooting victim and provided aid until EMS took the person to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, according to the release.

Further information on the victim’s condition was not available. No other injuries were reported.

At the same time, a search for Donlon was launched, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies searched the area until Donlon was located at a motel on Broad Street near Tryon Street and taken into custody, according to the release.

Donlon was booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where he was waiting for a bond hearing, according to the release.

Over the past 15 years, Donlon has been arrested multiple times and was convicted on an assault & battery charges in 2017, Sumter County court records show.
