SC corrections officer lands behind bars after having sex with inmates, SLED says

A former detention officer at the Greenville County Detention Center was arrested after an investigation alleged he had sex with inmates, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Jamil Chereze Higginbotham Mckenzie, 34, was charged Thursday with first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate and second-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate, according to a news release.

Investigators report that on or around June 6, 2024, Mckenzie had sex with an inmate under his supervision while employed as a detention officer at a facility located at 20 McGee Street in Greenville, the release said.

It’s unclear how many inmates Mckenzie allegedly engaged with sexually.

He was booked into his former place of employment, the Greenville County Detention Center, and remains jailed, according to records.
