Richland sheriff’s deputy strikes pedestrian while trying to stop a motorist

A Richland County Sheriff’s deputy struck a pedestrian while trying to stop a vehicle that ran a red light, the sheriff’s office said.

About 6:20 p.m. Thursday, a deputy, who was not identified by the department, saw a motorist run a red light. The deputy activated his emergency lights in an attempt to stop the motorist. As the deputy proceeded through the intersection at Greenlawn and Leesburg Road in Columbia, he struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street, the sheriff’s office said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and the person hit was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
