SC man was lured into a park where he was robbed and killed, officials say
Weeks after a man was shot and killed another South Carolina man has been arrested, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
Twenty-one-year-old Aiken resident Christopher Jamal James was charged with murder, criminal conspiracy and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday in a news release.
The charges are connected to the Nov. 7 shooting of 29-year-old Aiken resident Jamal Richardson, officials said.
At about 4:45 a.m. Nov. 8, deputies responded to reports of a body that was found at Windsor Recreational Park, according to the release. That’s at 126 Old School Road in the Windsor section of Aiken County.
The body was a shooting victim later identified as Richardson, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said. His office responded to the park at 5 a.m., and Richardson was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound at 5:35 a.m., according to Ables.
James was arrested Monday on the murder charge and other counts, jail records show.
James, along with an unnamed co-defendant, had lured Richardson into the park, where he was robbed then shot in the chest, according to arrest warrants.
Information about what was stolen from Richardson was not available, and there was no word if the victim and James knew each other prior to the shooting.
No other injuries were reported.
James was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center where he remains locked up as no bond has been set, jail records show. Following a bond hearing, he’s scheduled to return to court Jan. 16, 2026, Aiken County court records show.
Despite James’ arrest, the deadly shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said it issued arrest warrants for a pair of Orangeburg residents connected to Richardson’s death. Both 22-year-old Tyshawn Marquez Hughes and 23-year-old Shy’Tavia Kievonna James are wanted for charges of murder, criminal conspiracy and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to the sheriff’s office.
Anyone with information about Hughes and James, or the shooting, is asked to call sheriff’s office at 803-642-1761, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit a tip online.
James was out on bond from a previous arrest when Richardson was killed, court records show.
On Nov. 8, 2024, James was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to stop for a blue light, driving under suspension and possession of marijuana, according to court records. An $11,262.50 bond on those combined charges was posted two days later.
