Search for driver who hit a child with car then drove off, Columbia police say
A child was hit by a car while walking across a street in South Carolina on Tuesday, and a search is underway for the driver who left the scene, according to the Columbia Police Department.
At about 6:30 p.m., police reported the hit-and-run crash on social media.
The collision happened in the 5200 block of Fairfield Road, police said. That’s in a part of Columbia between North Main Street and Monticello Road, close to Alcorn Middle School and several retail businesses.
A 12-year-old child was walking across Fairfield Road when he was hit by a dark-colored sedan, according to police.
The child was taken to an area hospital after suffering what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
After hitting the pedestrian, the driver of the car left the scene, according to police.
The make and model of the car is unknown, along with the identity of the driver.
Police shared surveillance photos of the car believed to have been involved in the collision, and are asking anyone with information about the car or the person who was driving to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
