SC inmate dies in prison. Homicide suspected, officials say

An inmate was found dead inside a Pee Dee prison, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Correction officers at the Turbeville Correctional Institution found Luis Antonio Maldanado, 46, unresponsive in his cell the morning of Dec. 30, according to a news release.

The inmate’s death is being investigated as a suspected homicide by the department’s inspector general’s office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office, the release said.

An autopsy is forthcoming, according to the release.
