Search for gunman ends when he surrenders to deputies, SC sheriff says

A manhunt for a gunman, which caused a busy South Carolina street to be temporarily closed Wednesday, came to an end later that night when the suspected shooter surrendered to deputies, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Daquan Wilson, 28, turned himself in at the sheriff’s department headquarters, officials said Thursday in a news release. That’s approximately 5 miles from where the shooting occurred at an apartment complex at 313 Percival Road before noon, according to the release.

It was about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when deputies responded to the 1000 block of North Kings Street where there was a shooting victim sitting in a Chevrolet Impala that had been struck by multiple bullets, the sheriff’s department said. That’s in Columbia, near the intersection with Two Notch Road, not far from Exit 17 on I-77, and about 5 miles from the apartment complex.

Deputies found the victim who had been shot in the upper body, according to the release. EMS took the victim to an area hospital with what the sheriff’s department called non-life-threatening injuries. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Deputies quickly determined that the shooting happened at the apartment complex on Percival Road before the victim drove away in his vehicle, according to the release.

At the apartments, deputies found multiple spent bullet shells in the parking lot, and established it as the crime scene, the sheriff’s department said. Witnesses identified a specific apartment as being involved in the shooting, according to the release.

Multiple occupants were removed and interviewed regarding their involvement in the shooting, and investigators were able to identify Wilson as the shooter, the sheriff’s department said.

The sheriff’s department said it’s Special Response Team was called to the apartment complex, but they were unable to locate Wilson. For about an hour, as deputies searched for Wilson, a portion of Percival Road in front of the apartments was closed to the public.

There was an ongoing feud between Wilson and the victim that led to the shooting, according to the release. Information about the nature of the feud, and how Wilson and the victim knew each other, was not available. There was no word if Wilson was the only person who fired a gun during the shooting.

It was about 10 p.m., when Wilson surrendered at the sheriff’s department headquarters, according to the release.

Wilson was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, attempted murder and breach of peace, jail records show. Wilson was taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where he remains locked up while he waits for a bond hearing, the sheriff’s department said.

During the investigation, deputies received a call from an Eagle Feather Loop resident who complained that her home was hit by gunfire, according to an incident report shared by the sheriff’s department. A full projectile was found inside her kitchen, while a second bullet entered a bedroom but that shell was not recovered, the incident report said.
