SC police officer injured in shooting, suspect found dead after shootout

An officer was injured and a suspect is dead after an early-morning attack on a patrol vehicle in a police station parking lot.

The attack was captured on video at the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center after 1 a.m. on Sunday, according to a news release issued by the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division.

In the video, a car can be seen entering the parking lot and pulling up alongside a patrol car parked outside the station. Something is then fired into the patrol car, sending sparks flying high into the area. The Greenville police officer inside was injured and taken to the hospital, SLED said in the release. The officer was later released.

Greenville County sheriff’s deputies later identified the suspect’s car and a vehicle pursuit began.

“During a vehicle pursuit between deputies and the man, there was an exchange of gunfire and a car crash involving both the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and the man,” the news release said. “Following the pursuit, there was another exchange of gunfire. The man was found deceased in his vehicle.”

The suspect was identified by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office as David William Lane, 42.

Greenville-based Fox Carolina reported that the attacker used an incendiary device “designed to inflict maximum damage.” The coroner later determined Lane died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the TV station reported.

The sheriff’s office had reportedly been alerted to concerning behavior by Lane in the days leading up to the attack, after receiving complaints from neighbors at an apartment complex a week earlier.

“Deputies responded to and investigated each complaint and determined that while the comments and behavior were concerning, they did not warrant criminal warrants for an arrest,” the Greenville sheriff’s office said in a statement to Fox Carolina.
