Man went from being a guard at SC jail to an inmate, sheriff says. Here’s why
A man went from working as a guard at a jail in South Carolina to an inmate at the facility, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Cohanskie Goodson, 30, was arrested after using excessive force on an inmate at Columbia’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, the sheriff’s department said Wednesday in a news release.
On Jan. 22, an investigator working at the jail called for deputies, and when the law enforcement officers arrived at the detention center they were told about the assault, according to the release. The investigator reported that a corrections officer, later identified as Goodson, used a knee strike to an inmate’s face that caused a laceration above his eye and knocked him out, the sheriff’s department said.
The corrections officer did not render aid or immediately seek medication attention for the inmate, according to the release. Further information about the inmate’s condition was not available.
There was no word about what led to the assault.
On Wednesday, Goodson was charged with second-degree assault & battery as well as misconduct in office, Richland County court records show. Goodson was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and was later released on a $10,000 bond on the combined charges, the sheriff’s department said.
Goodson is scheduled to return to court on March 27, according to judicial records.
There was no word if Goodson was fired, or otherwise punished by his employers.
The jail is managed by the Richland County government, not the sheriff’s department.
