A Charleston man was killed during an officer-involved shooting after the man shot a deputy, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The shooting stemmed from a call Charleston County deputies received in reference to shots fired at a residence on Edenborough Road in Johns Island Tuesday evening, according to a news release. The following morning, deputies spotted a vehicle believed to belong to the shooting suspect at a gas station.

After attempting a traffic stop on the vehicle, the suspect fled and drove back to the home on Edenborough Road, the release said.

From there, the suspect exited the vehicle and ran into a wooded area armed with a handgun, according to the release. Following a search, deputies located and tased the man in order to subdue him.

A gunfight then broke out, where the man shot a deputy, prompting other officers to return fire. The man, identified as Floriberto Perez-Nieto, 34, died at the scene, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

The injured deputy, who was struck in his ballistic vest, was evaluated by EMS at the scene and later at the hospital, the release said.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, according to the release.
