11 more confirmed dead in SC after historic winter storms, health officials say
Eleven people in South Carolina died from wintry conditions brought by two storms that left behind ice, snow and frigid temperatures, according to the state health department.
The deaths occurred between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3, amid winter storms Fern and Gianna, bringing the total of fatalities to 17, according to a news release. While the primary cause of death was hypothermia, some died as a result of traffic accidents on hazardous roads.
The reported deaths, ranging in age from 29 to 90, include:
- A 36-year-old male from Abbeville who died from accidental blunt force trauma;
- A 67-year-old male from Anderson who died from hypothermia;
- A 60-year-old male from Beaufort who died from hypothermia;
- A 85-five-year-old male from Beaufort who died from hypothermia with potential CO2 exposure;
- A 48-year-old male from Calhoun who died from hypothermia;
- A 30-year-old man from Charleston who died from blunt force trauma during a traffic accident;
- A 29-year-old man from Colleton who died from blunt force trauma during a traffic accident;
- A 78-year-old man from Horry who died from a myocardial infarction;
- A 39-year-old man from Lexington who died from blunt force trauma during a traffic accident;
- A 90-year-old female from Lexington who died from hypothermia; and
- A 54-year-old male from Richland who died from hypothermia.
