Woman shot at Columbia laundromat and hours later an arrest is made, police say
A woman was shot at a laundromat in South Carolina on Tuesday night and hours later another woman was arrested, according to the Columbia Police Department.
At about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said 30-year-old Tierra Kirby was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature as well as possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
The victim was shot in the upper body, police said on social media. She’s hospitalized and is in serious condition, according to police.
No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened at Wash World, at 5820 North Main Street, according to police. That’s near the junction with Colonial Drive, about 2 miles from Exit 71 on I-20.
Officers responded to the laundromat at about 6 p.m.
Information about a motive for the gunfire was not available, but police said they believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation. There was no word if Kirby and the victim knew each other prior to the incident.
Officers recovered a weapon from the scene, which will be processed for evidence, police said.
Kirby was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where she is being held while waiting for a bond hearing, jail records show.
Following a bond hearing, Kirby is scheduled to return to court on April 24, Richland County judicial records show.
