Scooter rider dead after crash with car at intersection north of Columbia
An person on an electric scooter died Thursday night after colliding with a car at the intersection of Monticello Road and Ridgeway Street near Eau Claire High School, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
On Monday, the crash victim was identified as 57-year-old Columbia resident Tracey F. Brown, according to the Richland County Coroner’s Office.
The crash took place around 8:20 p.m.. on Feb. 19, more than an hour after sunset, said investigating Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.
The car, a 2003 Nissan Murano was going north on Monticello Road, and a Nova electric scooter was traveling west on Ridgeway Street. They crashed in the intersection at unknown speeds.
The rider of the scooter was transported to a nearby hospital where they died of their injuries, Davidson said.
There was no word on who had the right of way, what may have contributed to the crash and whether the scooter rider was wearing a safety helmet, equipment known to protect against serious head injuries.
People who ride scooters at nighttime can be hard to see, and it is not known at this time whether that played a role in contributing to the crash.
The name of the driver of the Nissan was not released by authorities.
