A man has been charged with stealing more than $48,000 dollars from a nursing home resident in Lexington County, South Carolina attorney general’s office announced Monday.

Cory Daniel Busbee, a 44-year-old from Gaston, was arrested by the Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud office. He faces two charges: one count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and one count of breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

An investigation found that Busbee exploited a vulnerable adult and unlawfully used their assets for personal gain between March 2023 and October 2024, according to a news release. While serving as the person’s power of attorney, Busbee accessed their bank account to make unauthorized withdrawals and purchases that totaled more than $48,500.

He was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center on Feb. 20.

The attorney general’s office will prosecute the case. If convicted, Busbee could face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 for exploitation of a vulnerable adult and another 10 years in prison, plus an additional fine, for breach of trust with fraudulent intent.
