21-year-old arrested after two men were shot and one of them died, SC cops say

Weeks after two people who had been shot were found inside a vehicle, with one of them later dying, a South Carolina man was arrested on multiple charges, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Avery Humphrey II, a 21-year-old Leesville resident, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, jail records show.

The charges stem from a February shooting in the Wagener area, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday in a news release. Rashaun Brinkley, a 30-year-old Lexington resident, is the man who died, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables previously said.

On Feb. 16, a person called emergency services saying they had been shot, the sheriff’s office said.

The caller said the shooting happened in the 700 block of Bethcar Church Road, according to the release. That’s about 7 miles from Exit 33 on I-20.

It was near Rawls Mill Pond Road and Old Ninety Six Indian Trail where deputies found two men inside a vehicle and discovered that both had been shot, according to the release. That’s about 3.5 miles from where the shooting occurred.

Both victims were taken to an area hospital, where Brinkley later died, the sheriff’s office said. The surviving victim, a 29-year-old man, told deputies he was shot multiple times and that Brinkley had been shot in the head, according to an incident report.

Further information on the condition of the surviving victim was not available. No other injuries were reported.

On Monday, Humphrey surrendered at the sheriff’s office and was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center, according to the release. No bond has been set on the charges and Humphrey remains behind bars, jail records show.

There was no word on a motive for the gunfire.
