Police shoot a home intruder in Aiken County. Second suspect in custody
A burglary suspect was shot by deputies after breaking into a home Friday morning, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 9 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Connector Road in Graniteville in response to a burglary in progress, according to a news release.
When they arrived, they found a door that appeared to be forced open in the back of home. Grady Lafone Owenby, 51, then attempted to flee from the residence before he was captured and taken into custody, the release said.
As deputies continued to clear the home, another suspect, Jacob Harrison Craven, 32, was found inside wielding a firearm, prompting a deputy to shoot the suspect, according to the release. Craven was transported by EMS to an area hospital where he remains being treated for injuries sustained during the shooting, according to the release.
Owenby was charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.
Once released from the hospital, Craven will be charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, the release said.
No deputies were injured during the incident, according to the release.
As the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the burglary, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will investigate the shooting, the release said.
“I stand behind the actions of our deputies involved in this incident as they worked to protect the community,” Aiken County Sheriff Martin Sawyer Jr., said in the release.
