Human remains were found during renovations to a Columbia home.

Police were called around 4 p.m. Wednesday when workers installing an HVAC at a home on the 700 block of Kilbourne Road found a “small quantity of skeletal remains,” according to WLTX.

The bones are being examined to identify who they might belong to, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford told the station in a statement. Examination confirmed the remains were human, WIS reported.

The remains were found in an area near a busy section of Devine Street in the upscale Heathwood neighborhood. No cause of death has been identified.
