Woman stole more than $10,000 from vulnerable adult, SC attorney general says
A Midlands woman was arrested Tuesday on charges that she stole money from a vulnerable adult she was supposed to be caring for, according to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
Gina B. Carnaggio, a 58-year-old Gilbert resident, was charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult and breach of trust with fraudulent intent (value $10,000 or more), the S.C. Attorney General’s Office said in a news release.
An investigation uncovered that Carnaggio misused her power of attorney over a vulnerable adult, according to the release. The vulnerable adult resided in an assisted living facility in Lexington when the crimes occurred, the S.C. Attorney General’s Office said.
From May 31, 2024, to July 28, 2025, Carnaggio is accused of improperly taking more than $10,000 from the victim’s bank account for her personal benefit, “with the alleged intent to permanently deprive the victim of those funds” the S.C. Attorney General’s Office said. Information about the exact amount of money that was taken was not available.
According to investigators, Carnaggio used the money for various personal purchases and conducted transactions through multiple buy-now-pay-later services, according to the release. There was no word about the specific items that was purchased with the stolen money, or how much was spent.
Carnaggio was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center and remains behind bars while waiting for a bond hearing, jail records show. Following a bond hearing, Carnaggio is scheduled to return to court May 14, according to Lexington County judicial records.
If convicted on the felony fraud charge, Carnaggio faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a fine, while the top punishment for a conviction on the felony exploitation charge would result in 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine, according to South Carolina law.
