79-year-old arrested after person was shot in Richland County, SC sheriff says

A man was taken to jail and another person was taken to a South Carolina hospital following a shooting Tuesday, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Larry Brown, 79, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

The charges stem from a shooting in the Gadsden area that deputies responded to at about noon, according to the release.

In the 300 block of Goodwin Way, deputies found a person who had been shot in the lower body, the sheriff’s department said. EMS took the victim to an area hospital, according to the release. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Brown, who was identified as the shooter, was detained by deputies as he tried to leave the area, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he remains locked up as no bond has been set, jail records show.

Following a bond hearing, Brown is scheduled to return to court on May 29, according to Richland County judicial records.

Investigators and members of the sheriff’s department’s crime scene unit responded to Goodwin Way, according to the release. They learned that Brown and the victim knew each other prior to the gunfire and were arguing before shots were fired, the sheriff’s department said. Information about why they were arguing was not available.
