Midlands kindergartner found with knife and gun in bookbag at elementary school
A kindergartner at a Midlands elementary school was found with a knife and handgun inside his bookbag, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
As students at Harrisburg Elementary School were packing their things, preparing for dismissal, a teacher helping the five-year-old student noticed a knife in his bookbag, according to a news release. The teacher alerted the school’s administration, which called the school resource officer, who upon searching the kid’s bookbag, found the knife and a .380 calibur pistol.
“This was an alarming incident, and I am thankful no one was harmed intentionally or accidentally by these weapons,” said Sheriff Barry Faile in a news release. “We will investigate this incident thoroughly to find out how this occurred and will take appropriate action as the results of the investigation indicate.”
Both weapons were seized by the SRO, who contacted the student’s parents, the release said.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office are actively investigating the incident and focused on determining the owner of the the knife and the pistol and who put them into the bookbag, when and why, according to the release.
