16-year-old charged after another teenager was shot, South Carolina police say

One teenager is in a hospital while another is being charged with multiple crimes following a Wednesday night shooting, according to the Sumter Police Department.

A 16-year-old, who was not publicly identified because of his age, was charged with attempted murder, possession of a handgun by a person under 18 and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said Thursday in a news release.

As of Thursday morning, the 15-year-old shooting victim was in critical but stable condition at an area hospital, according to the release.

At about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded reports of a shooting at Crosswell Park, police said. The 15-year-old had been shot in the area of the park near the playground, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

Video surveillance at the park helped officers quickly identify a suspect who was seen talking with the victim prior to the shooting, police said.

Officers located the 16-year-old, a Cherryvale resident, at a home in the city where he was taken in to custody, according to the release. A gun also was recovered, police said.

The teens are acquaintances, but what led to the shooting — and how the teen got the gun — remains under investigation, according to the release.

The 16-year-old was taken to a South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice facility, police said. Despite the charges, the shooting continues to be investigated by police.
