Date night at Chili’s ends with two men in jail, South Carolina police say

A recent date night at a restaurant in South Carolina did not go well, and by the end of the evening two armed men were arrested, according to the Sumter Police Department.

The date happened April 23 at the Chili’s Grill and Bar at 2505 Broad Street, police said in a news release. That’s in a part of Sumter densely packed with restaurants and retail businesses.

At about 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the Chili’s, where there were reports of a man pointing a gun, according to the release.

Investigators learned that a woman was on a date with one of the men, but felt uneasy and called friends for help, police said. When her friends arrived there was a confrontation, and one man pulled a gun while the other man responded by showing that he was armed with knives on his body, according to the release.

Fellow 21-year-olds Tristan Gabriel Letterman, of Mayesville, and Ariel Lagunes-Sarmiento, Sumter, were both charged with aggravated breach of peace, police said. Letterman also was charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, according to the release.

It was not clear which man was on the date and which was a friend who responded in an effort to help the woman.

No injuries occurred during what police called a disturbance.

Both Letterman and Lagunes-Sarmiento were booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, according to the release. Information about their bond statuses was not available.

Despite the arrests, police said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
