SC man charged in for shooting at SRO in Richland County school parking lot

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has released more details in the Monday shooting outside Horrell Hill Elementary School that left one person injured and the school on lockdown.

Toynika Hall, a school resource officer at Horrell Hill, was patrolling campus in her squad car just after 1 p.m. when she noticed a black truck, Sheriff Leon Lott said, and the truck began following her. She then saw that the driver was pointing a pistol at her. Rather than engage in a gunfight, she left the area and notified the school to be put on lockdown.

The man was identified as Corey Gibbons, 44, of Columbia. Sheriff’s department officials said his motive was unclear, as he had no known connections to Hall or the school.

Lott said an investigation found four bullet holes in a truck, which had come from inside the vehicle. Gibbons told deputies that he had “shot himself,” though it is unclear whether it was intentional or accidental.

“Fortunately, I’m not standing here talking about a school shooting,” Lott said.

Gibbons was taken to the hospital for his injuries on Monday, where he remains. Once he is medically cleared, he will be taken to jail, Lott said.
