Fatal head-on crash kills five on Highway 101 in Spartanburg

Five people were killed in a head-on collision around 1 a.m. Friday on Highway 101 in Spartanburg County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The Trinity Fire Department responded to the collision near Bellview Road Extension on Highway 101 after the department was alerted of an iPhone crash notification at that location.

Officials said that when crews arrived, they found a Ford SUV and a Toyota SUV with multiple occupants trapped inside.

The Ford was traveling north on Highway 101 and the Toyota was traveling south when the vehicles collided, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Toyota and two passengers in the vehicle were killed. A fourth passenger was transported to a nearby hospital, but their condition is unclear.

The driver and a passenger in the Ford were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has not released the identities of the victims.
