Shot man found in Richland County, South Carolina sheriff says

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said it’s investigating an early morning shooting that left a man hospitalized Wednesday.

At about 2:50 a.m., deputies responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the area near the intersection of Decker Boulevard and Plainfield Road, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in the part of Columbia between U.S. 1/Two Notch Road and I-77.

ShotSpotter is a technology that uses acoustic monitors to detect a sound like gunfire. The system sends the gunfire’s location to law enforcement within 45 seconds.

Deputies learned that a man was shot at that location, but he had since moved near Exit 20 on S.C. 277, according to the release. After tracking the man down, deputies learned he had been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said.

EMS took the man to an area hospital, according to the release. Further information on his condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the shooter, or shooters, and if any more people were involved, was not available. There was no word about a motive for the gunfire.

No arrests were reported by the sheriff’s department, which is continuing to investigate the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
