Man shot at motel dies and two others are arrested, SC officials say
One man was killed in a weekend shooting at a South Carolina motel and two others have been charged with murder, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Jason Johnson, a 43-year-old Orangeburg resident, is the man who died following the Saturday morning shooting at the Crown Inn Motel, the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.
Fellow 35-year-old men Arron Ryant, of Cordova, and Orangeburg resident Demetresse Jenkins were arrested on multiple charges, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.
Both Ryant and Jenkins were charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to the sheriff’s office. Ryant also was charged with burglary and possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes, the sheriff’s office said.
The charges stem from the May 30 shooting at the Crown Inn Motel on Bamberg Road in Orangeburg.
At about 10 a.m. May 30, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at the motel, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies found the shooting victim, later identified as Johnson, according to the sheriff’s office.
Johnson was taken to MUSC Health Orangeburg hospital where he later died, the coroner’s office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about how deputies connected Ryant and Jenkins to the shooting was not available. There was no word about a motive for the gunfire, or if the men knew each other prior to the shooting.
Despite the arrests, the sheriff’s office said it’s continuing to investigate the deadly shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-531-4647.
