Deputies respond to home invasion then find shooting victim elsewhere, SC cops say
One person was shot Sunday in an early morning home invasion in South Carolina, but found at another location, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
At about 3 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a possible home invasion in the 200 block of Sandpine Circle, the sheriff’s department said Monday in a news release. That’s in Columbia, near Bombing Range Road and Lake Carolina.
Shortly after arriving to that home, deputies received a call about a person who’d been shot on Whitton Lane, according to the release. That’s a little more than a mile from Sandpine Circle.
Deputies responded to that nearby address and found a person who’d been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said. Deputies provided medical aid until EMS arrived and took the victim to an area hospital, according to the release.
Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
The sheriff’s department confirmed that the home invasion and shooting were related.
A woman who reported the home invasion said that the man who broke into her home was “frantic,” and she believed that she shot him, the sheriff’s department said in an incident report.
She told deputies that a home invader punched her in the eye, before another person pulled her attacker back, allowing her to go upstairs to her room and grab her pistol, according to the incident report.
As the attacker continued to advance toward her, making threats, the woman told deputies that she fired the gun in his direction “as a warning shot,” the incident report said. She said this only enraged the man who continued toward her up the stairs, saying he wasn’t afraid, according to the incident report.
The woman said she fired the handgun a second time, and although she wasn’t sure if she hit the man, he said “You shot me,” before his brother came into the home and those two left with the brother driving away in a car, the incident report shows.
Information about why that person who’d been shot was found on Whitton Lane was not available, and there was no word on a motive for the home invasion.
Information about the number of people involved in both incidents was not available, but the woman said her children were home at the time of the home invasion and shooting, and saw both, according to the incident report.
No arrests have been reported in the incidents that are actively being investigated by the sheriff’s department.
