Fatal crash in the Midlands leaves one dead and another behind bars, police say
A Midlands man will remain behind bars after being arrested for driving under the influence and causing a person’s death, according to the Sumter Police Department.
Jaquan Wells, 29, was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death, following a crash on Sunday where he collided with a moped on Atlantic Avenue near Gates Street in Sumter, according to a news release.
The crash happened around noon, when Wells was crossing over Atlantic Avenue to park before crashing into a moped that was being operated by Marcus McNeil, 36, of Sumter, the release said.
McNeil died on the scene of the crash. His family was subsequently notified by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office, according to the release.
Wells was taken by a private vehicle to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital for minor injuries and later notified police of his location, the release said.
After discovering evidence of impairment, Wells was taken into custody and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center, where he was denied bond Tuesday, according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sumter Police Department, the release said.
