Second mother arrested in connection to shootout in the Summit, sheriff says
The mother of one of several suspects charged with participating in a massive shootout with deputies in the Summit have been arrested, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Alicia Magwood, 46, was charged with accessory after the fact of a felony, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of a schedule I-IV narcotic and possession of a stolen firearm, after deputies discovered she’d allegedly aided her son — Sireon Beaufort, 18 — following his alleged involvement in shootout with deputies in the Summit neighborhood on June 4, according to a news release.
In addition, Arrington Jones, 17 — who has a child together with Beaufort — was charged with accessory after the fact of a felony, the release said.
Beaufort was previously charged with three counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and aggravated breach of peace, after Richland County deputies were shot at while investigating two prior shootings, Sheriff Leon Lott announced at a news conference earlier this month.
Shortly after the shooting on June 4, deputies say Magwood and Jones drove Beaufort back to the scene of the incident to search for a bag containing guns used in the shooting, the release said. The bag, however, had already been collected as evidence by deputies.
On June 5, Magwood and Jones drove Beaufort to the sheriff’s department to turn himself in on warrants connected to the shooting. Upon finding that Magwood and Jones arrived at the department in the same vehicle used during the shooting, it was searched, where deputies found a bag of narcotics and a stolen firearm, the release said.
Magwood and Jones were both booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Dentention Center. Jones is being charged as an adult due to the severity of the crime, according to the release.
Magwood’s arrest marks the second mother arrested in connection with the shooting. On June 18, Sade Grooms, 41, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Grooms is the mother of a 16-year-old who was charged in the case, and was aware of the teen’s criminal involvement but failed to intervene, according to a news release.
She, too, was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and was released a day later on a $25,000 bond, the release said.
