An inmate at the Aiken County Detention Center died Thursday after suffering a “medical crisis” at the jail the day before, the Aiken County Coroner said.

David Green Jr., 54, of Warrenville, was pronounced dead just after 9 a.m. at WellStar MCG Health Medical Center in Augusta, Ga., Coroner Darryl Ables said in a statement.

Green Jr. was first taken to Aiken Regional Medical Center on Wednesday after falling ill, but was subsequently transferred to WellStar MCG for a higher level of care, Ables said.

Neither the coroner nor the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office have released any information about the nature of Green Jr.’s medical issue.

An autopsy will be scheduled in Newberry to determine his cause and manner of death. SLED has also been notified and will be investigating Green Jr.’s death, authorities said.
